It is estimated that there are 10³¹ viruses on our planet. Fortunately, the vast majority of them only infect bacteria and are harmless to humans. In fact, we sometimes use them to treat bacterial infections or prevent bacterial growth on food. But there are some viruses that cause devastating diseases in humans. For example, influenza takes around 400,000 human lives every year.
